If you’re ready to upgrade your mattress, we've got good news: You don't need to plan to head to a local showroom to test out the latest and greatest models. You can shop online for a new mattress, and after years of testing products from a variety of popular brands, we've found that some of today's very best products are sold exclusively online.
We've tossed, turned, and slept soundly on more than 50 mattresses over two years of testing, and some of our favorites are online mattresses. Our favorite products are those that deliver a combination of support, comfort and cushioning, and good value thanks to their durability, quality construction, and ability to improve our sleep.
While our testing showed us that the best online mattresses are highly personal and dependent on individual preferences, there are plenty of quality options for a wide range of needs.

Saatva launched back in 2010 with a desire to reshape the mattress industry, and the brand changed the game by offering perks like 24/7 customer service and a no-strings-attached home trial. Since then, Saatva has taken off—and its mattresses have become some of our favorites, thanks to a combination of serious comfort and lasting support.
Saatva's mattresses are definitely top-tier, with luxurious details and higher prices. The company offers a slew of products to meet your needs, and we've tested a wide range of these online mattresses. We've tried (and love) the Solaire, which offers adjustable firmness, and the hypoallergenic-latex-made Zenhaven.
You can also choose from five other adult-sized mattresses, meaning there really is something for everyone. We've found that, across the board, Saatva's mattresses offer supreme support, no matter your sleep position or preferences. Plus, we love that each mattress is made to order when purchased online.
Our favorite is the Saatva Classic Mattress, which we found offers a tremendous amount of support and customizability in our testing. That's thanks to its three options for firmness: plush soft, luxury firm, and firm. High-density memory foam provides pressure point relief, a key comfort-enhancing detail.
We particularly liked the edge-to-edge support; we could roll onto the edge of the bed or sit up with our legs hanging off, and the mattress barely gave under our weight. However, it’s important to note that the coils don’t limit all motion transfer, meaning that if your partner moves a lot during the night, you’ll feel it.

Purple is the culmination of 20 years of work for two brothers, Tony, an aerospace engineer, and Terry, a manufacturing and materials expert. They set out to create mattresses that would alleviate pain so that people could live their best lives. Today you can purchase through the company’s website, Mattress Firm, and Amazon.
With its Essential Collection, Purple offers three mattresses at lower prices, all using the company’s GelFlex Grid. The Premium Collection also includes three mattresses, all more expensive and luxury-like in design and materials, with these products featuring an innovative GelFlex Grid as well as a Responsive Coil Core.
We've tested numerous Purple mattresses, including the plush pillowtop RejuvenatePlus Mattress (one of our absolute favorites!) and the firmer Restore Hybrid Mattress (one of our favorite queen-size mattresses). With a wide selection of online mattress options, Purple has something to suit every sleeper, whether you're seeking extra support, pressure point relief, or a plush mattress that invites you to sink in after a long day.
In particular, The Purple Mattress has over 1,400 air channels built in, so you know it’ll breathe easy all night long. Plus, the GelFlex grid that Purple is known for supports you while keeping pressure points cradled and comfortable. It’s also a hypoallergenic option, which we think is great!

Bear was started by a family with 25 years of mattress experience, with a goal of creating mattresses to help everyone from professional athletes to teenagers wake up feeling their absolute best.
With three different mattress options covering every size from twin to split king, you can try out and purchase Bear’s mattresses at a number of locations across the United States. The mattresses can also be found on the company’s website.
We've tested the Bear Original Mattress, which is a great pick priced under $1,000 (and includes two pillows). We love the quick out-of-the-box expansion time and the body-molding comfort of this memory foam mattress, which offered just the right balance of pressure relief and support for us.
If you’re a hot sleeper, the Bear Elite Hybrid is a great pick. It includes copper-infused memory foam to ensure a cool night of sleep, and edge-to-edge individually encased coils increase the durability of this mattress. It’s also UL Greenguard Gold Certified and made in the USA. Plus, it comes in a box!
One drawback with Bear mattresses, though, is they can soften over time, losing the support present in the beginning.

Founded in 2016 as a result of frustration with dishonest marketing, non-organic options, and overpriced mattresses, Avocado sought to change things by creating affordable mattress options made with high-quality organic materials.
The Hoboken, New Jersey-based brand currently has 14 retail locations, with more on the horizon. Of course, you can also purchase one of its mattresses on the company’s website. The brand has five mattresses built for adults as well as three crib options and one kid-sized mattress.
As far as the adult mattresses go, they’re all available in sizes twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king (with two of the options available in the split California king size).
Avocado’s best seller is the Luxury Organic Mattress, a softer option that includes 17 layers of latex, alpaca, wool, silk, and hemp. The mattress offers a choice between the standard option, which ranks a 5/10 on the firmness scale, and the much plusher option, which sits at a 3/10. We tested the Eco Organic Mattress and found it to be one of our favorite organic mattresses, with a hybrid construction that suits all sleeping positions and provides standout body support.
While the price point of Avocado's mattresses is higher than many others on our list, you are getting a lot of long-term value, plus unique; for example, each mattress is needle tufted by hand.

The Merwin brothers started Brooklyn Bedding in 1995. The company grew from a few retail shops in the Phoenix area to selling mattresses online over time. Today, all of its beds are made at an American factory. Brooklyn Bedding does have showrooms as well as partnerships across the country where you can try the product line. However, you can easily purchase your next mattress right on the company’s website or on Amazon.
Brooklyn Bedding offers three different standard mattresses: one with a hotel feel, one cooling, and one hybrid. The brand also offers specialty mattresses that are more firm for specific body types and help promote muscle recovery for athletes.
The brand’s Aurora Luxe Cooling Mattress is for hot sleepers. It uses a GlacioTex Cooling Cover to remove your excess heat, ensuring cool sleep. The cooling technology doesn’t stop there, though. The top comfort layer uses PCM dynamic cooling to absorb heat, while hybrid airflow prevents heat retention.
Additionally, it comes in three firmness options, ensuring stomach, side, and back sleepers are all accounted for (and comfortable!). One drawback for some is a soft center that allows for sinking.

As one of the leaders in online bed-in-a-box mattresses, Casper has been selling its products online since 2014. In that time, the company has contributed over 70,000 mattresses to people in need. Casper’s mattresses are constantly updated and improved based on research data.
The Casper Original is a classic and for good reason. This mattress offers "cloudlike comfort" according to our reviewer, albeit at a bit of a premium price. The mattress arriving in a box (with a return label included) is incredibly convenient.
We've tested multiple Casper mattresses, and we're big fans of the brand’s hybrid mattresses. These online mattress are well-built, with three layers to provide maximal comfort. The second layer includes three ergonomic zones to ensure your spine remains aligned while your shoulders can gently sink and your hips remain cradled.
It's worth noting, though, that Casper only offers a 10-year warranty on its mattresses. That's on the lower side of the spectrum (with other online brands like Saatva offering lifetime warranties), but since the average mattress lasts about eight to 10 years, it's not too concerning.

When brothers Akbar and Akrum Sheikh set out to enter the mattress manufacturing marketplace in 2016, their goal was to create a great mattress as well as a great way to buy a mattress. The two brothers wanted a system that kept prices down and provided quality products. Today, you can purchase Layla’s American-made mattresses on the company’s website and on Amazon.
Layla offers both a memory foam mattress as well as a more expensive hybrid option.Products are available in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. The memory foam mattress uses copper gel, which is able to adjust to your shifting weight with increased firmness, offering support all night long. Additionally, copper is conductive, which allows it to draw away heat from your body, ensuring a cooler night of sleep.
However, some customers found this particular Layla mattress to be slightly too firm for their needs. With just two mattresses to choose from, the hybrid alternative may not be any less firm for those in need of extra softness.

Founded in 2012 with a focus on prioritizing customers, Tuft and Needle has grown into one of the more famous online mattress companies of the past decade or so. All of the brand’s mattresses are free from harmful ingredients, and customer feedback is used to continually improve the product lineup.
Today, you can find Tuft and Needle mattresses at plenty of places online, from retail partners like Crate & Barrel and Jordan’s Furniture to Amazon—and of course the brand’s own website.
Three mattress options are available to accommodate different sleeping styles, needs, and price points. As Michael Breus, PhD, a clinical psychologist and fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, notes, “Most people do best on a medium firm,” which is why The Mint Mattress from Tuft and Needle is so universally great.
Additionally, the T & N adaptive foam offers pressure relief and mitigates hip and shoulder pain. Fortunately, this doesn’t come at the expense of cooling technology. Some users do complain of mild off-gassing when the mattress first arrives, but this dissipates over time.

Nest Bedding is a family-owned company founded in 2011. While it’s famous for being one of the first mattress-in-a-box companies, Nest also creates mattresses with a special focus: using only clean, American-made materials.
The brand has showrooms in California, Washington, Texas, Illinois, and Minnesota, but you can easily purchase through the company’s website as well. Nest has nine different mattresses with options ranging from hybrid to latex, so there’s something available for every kind of sleeper. There’s also a handy quiz to help you find out which one is best for you.
The Robin, a flippable memory foam hybrid, is an option for all kinds of sleepers—stomach, back, and side alike—because of its dual firmness options (medium feel on the top and a firm feel on the bottom). Plus, you get the best of both worlds with CertiPUR-US certified foams offering cushiony support and coils that offer airflow and edge support. Not firm enough? Flip it to the other side!
One drawback: We found the sides aren’t labeled, meaning you can't be sure which firmness you're getting.

Parachute was founded in 2014 by Ariel Kaye, a design enthusiast who was frustrated that the mattress options out there weren’t cutting it in terms of quality, affordability, and shoppability. While it started as an online-only brand, Parachute now has brick-and-mortar shops across the United States.
Parachute sells an array of products, including bedding, furniture, shower curtains, and many other items. Just one mattress is offered, but it’s highly regarded—and it can be purchased online only through the company’s website.
This mattress, the Eco Comfort, is built with layers of New Zealand wool, organic cotton, and pocketed steel coils to bring you an eco-friendly night of sleep. It features two comfort zones at the top and bottom to ensure pressure point relief at the shoulders and alignment in the legs, while a support zone in the middle provides stability and enforcement for the hips and back. It’s all about support; however, the mattress can lose a bit of support over time.

Built out of a need to help his daughter Emily, who had eczema and environmental allergies, Tim Masters created My Green Mattress in 2006. The brand aims to grant everyone a peaceful night of sleep on a bed made with organic materials. My Green Mattress sells three adult mattresses and two for kids. All of the brand’s mattresses feature latex and other organic ingredients, and one is purely latex with no springs.
One of the highest-rated picks from My Green Mattress is the Natural Escape. It uses Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS)-certified organic latex and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified organic wool and cotton, which combine to create body-conforming comfort.
Plus, the company’s attention to detail shines through with the button tufting done by hand across this mattress. One drawback, however, is a slight off-gassing odor that dissipates over time. Also, it can be a bit firm for the first few nights, but it breaks in rather quickly.

Daniel Adler founded WinkBeds in 2015. Frustrated with costly mattresses that simply didn’t meet his needs, he decided to make his own. Today, you can purchase one of WinkBeds’ three mattresses—two made with foam as well as a Talalay latex option—right online.
The brand’s best seller, The WinkBed, is offered in a full range of sizes (excluding split California king) and has four firmness options: softer, luxury firm, firmer, and plus (for heavier people). Individually wrapped pocketed coils ensure support along the entire mattress, meaning the edge-of-the-bed sleepers can breathe a sigh of relief.
Additionally, the pillow top, with gel-infused foam, provides cushioning where your body needs it most so you can avoid muscle tension. One drawback of this mattress is its weight. It's hard to move, and a lack of handles only compounds the issue.

Zinus has been around since 1979, with its initial products being tents. After a few years, founder Youn Jae Lee added indoor offerings. The goal of the company is to provide products that are affordable, easy to assemble, and wonderful. Today, you can purchase Zinus products—including mattresses—online through Wayfair, Amazon, Home Depot, Walmart, Target, and the Zinus website.
The brand offers two material choices for your mattress, with hybrid and memory foam options; in total, you can choose from 18 models. We’ve tested the Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress by Zinus previously, and it was a hit! This mattress comes delivered in a box, and it quite literally infuses green tea into each layer to keep things fresh. Three layers of memory, comfort, and base foams plus seven zones of pressure relief combine to make sure your back is well supported.
It’s also durable and affordable, with the lowest price on our list. Drawbacks include that it takes longer than other mattresses to expand and is a bit heavy to move.

In the early 1990s, Bobby Trussel discovered Tempur material when sleeping on a mattress in Sweden. He brought this material home and created one of the most famous mattress brands of the past 30 years: TempurPedic.
While you can find these innovative beds at hundreds of retailers across the United States, you can also shop the company’s selection right online, including on Amazon. The brand offers four different mattresses, ranging from adjustable to one designed for cooling.
The Tempur-Cloud is a mattress for anybody with back or neck pain, as the Tempur Comfort and Tempur Support layers are designed with responsiveness, conforming, and cushioning to ensure pressure relief all night long. It also offers great motion-transfer reduction to help you and your partner sleep soundly. One drawback is that some find the mattress to be a bit too firm for their needs. Founded in 2013, Sleep On Latex has become the largest retailer of latex mattress products in America through its usage of Pure Green Natural Latex foam, a revolutionary product. The online mattress company is consistently reinvesting to ensure its products and development only continue to improve. You can purchase a Sleep On Latex mattress from the company’s website.
The Pure Green Organic Mattress is the company’s only mattress, but it’s available in medium and firm options. Built with organic latex, organic cotton, and organic New Zealand wool, it’s hand-sewn and assembled in an Illinois factory. The latex offers added breathability while also absorbing pressure, making this mattress a selection for anyone who needs back pain relief.
We also like that this online mattress arrives fully assembled in recyclable packaging. Some have complained it’s too firm, even the medium option, for their needs.
How We Picked the Online Mattresses
We've tested quite a few mattresses here at The Spruce, and as a result we've gotten familiar with most of today's popular mattress brands. Many of those brands are online mattress companies (or, at the very least, companies that sell their products both in-store and online.)
So, to put together our list of the best online mattresses, we first looked at the more than 50 mattress we've tested over the years. We considered which mattresses performed the best and were favorites of our testers over the long-term, looking at key details like their support and all-around comfort. But we also looked
at how durable the mattresses were and how they continued to hold up over the course of six months to a year of use.
From there, we took a look at which mattress retailers stood out the most frequently as top performers in our testing. For example, we noticed that we particularly loved mattresses from Saatva and Purple, brands that were favorites across the board no matter which model we tested. We used the insights and data from multiple rounds of mattress testing to inform which companies made our list (and which did not.)
What to Look for in an Online Mattress Company
Mattresses at Every Price Point
Like any other investment, price is a major consideration for a mattress. As Breus points out, you should spend some money “because you spend more time on your bed than any other thing in your home.”
Fortunately, there’s no shortage of options for every price range. More expensive mattresses are over $1,400, but cheaper options can be found for less than $850.Our favorite online mattress companies are those that offer mattresses across a range of different prices so there's something for every sleeper and every budget.
However, it’s important to find the intersection between price and quality. You don’t want to spend more than you’re comfortable with, but you shouldn’t sacrifice a good night's sleep with a cheap mattress. Our pick for the most affordable option is the Zinus Memory Foam because it’s just that: the intersection of affordability and quality.
Comfort and Sleep Quality
It’s vital when shopping for a mattress to make sure it appeals to your individual needs. If you’re someone who needs more support and finds a firm sleep surface more comfortable, a firmer option (either in material or build) is your best bet. Conversely, if you prefer a more plush option, we recommend the Saatva Classic Mattress in plush soft.
Some mattresses can take a few nights to break in, so it’s important to not give up if night one isn’t everything you were dreaming of. However, if things don’t get better, you should absolutely switch and find something that improves your sleep quality.
A Variety of Mattress Sizes
Choosing the right mattress size comes down to a number of factors. If you’re an average-sized person sleeping alone, then a full-size bed should work just fine. If you’re taller, you may want to look into a king or a queen, each of which stretches 80 inches long.
If you have a smaller living space, you’ll most likely need a twin mattress, which is 38 by 75 inches, or a twin XL, which is 38 by 80 inches. For us, the best twin option is the Casper Original, because it offers a good balance between firmness and cushion.
Different Levels of Firmness and Support
Different sleepers will require different firmness options. For example, side sleepers will benefit from more cushioning, because, according to Breus, it’s “needed around the shoulders and hips to keep these areas aligned with the spine.”
Body type will also contribute to your firmness and support needs. Breus says in general, “The more you weigh, the deeper your body will sink into your mattress.” As a result, heavier people will benefit from a mattress in the 6 to 8 range on the firmness scale, while people lighter than 130 pounds should seek something softer for cushioning and contouring.
Our pick for a firm mattress is the Bear Elite Hybrid in Firm; it offers a solid foundation and stellar motion isolation.
The Mattress Materials and Types Offered
Breus points out that, while there are a lot of kinds of mattresses, there are five materials a mattress can be made from: foam, latex, innerspring, hybrid, and airbed. Each one offers its own benefits and is suited for specific needs.
For example, foam tends to be contouring, making it a good option for someone who needs spinal support. Our favorite foam mattress is the Tempur-Cloud by TempurPedic because of its responsiveness while eliminating motion transfer.
Latex, on the other hand, tends to be contouring with less sinking, plus it’s more breathable, making it an option for people who sleep hot.
Breus tells us that innerspring mattresses are good for people who move around a lot, as the surface allows for movement without a lot of sinkage; additionally, they tend to be more affordable than other mattresses.
The advantages of a hybrid mattress will come down to what it's made of. For example, Breus says, “Foam hybrids are a good choice for people who need cushioning and pressure relief without sacrificing sturdy support. Latex hybrids tend to be very responsive and breathable.”
So, it’s worth being clear on what exactly you are looking for and your needs before you purchase a mattress.
Durable Construction for Longevity
Any mattress is an investment, so it’s important to make sure you’re buying one that will withstand the test of time. There are a handful of different materials beds can be made of, and each offers its own lifespan. However, if longevity is your main concern, Breus recommends latex: “Latex and high-density foam resist wear and tear better than other comfort layer materials.”
Breus points out that a mattress breaking down over time is unavoidable, no matter the materials, but latex is your best bet to combat this. Our personal favorite latex mattress is the Natural Escape by My Green Mattress. It offers just the right amount of cushioning and give.
