Jujutsu Kaisen is a series where the supporting character Satoru Gōjō is so beloved that most people think the whole series is actually about him. But it is not. Namely, Jujutsu Kaisen tells the story of Yūji Itadori, the unlikely protagonist and a vessel for the extremely powerful Ryōmen Sukuna. And while most people want Itadori to consume as many of Sukuna’s fingers as possible and then die, Gōjō is the one protecting him. But was Gōjō successful with this? In this article, we are going to tell you whether Itadori has died in Jujutsu Kaisen and what happened to him in the series.
Yūji Itadori has, indeed, died in Episode 5 of Jujutsu Kaisen, titled “Fearsome Womb, Part 2”, which premiered on October 31, 2020, and was adapted from Chapter 9 of the manga. His death was quite short, though, as he came back to life fairly quickly. Yūji Itadori came back to life in Episode 6 of Jujutsu Kaisen, titled “After the Rain,” which had its premiere on November 7, 2020, in Japan and was adapted from Chapter 11 of the manga. As of now, he is alive and well.
The rest of this article is going to focus on the events surrounding the death and resurrection of Yūji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen. We are going to reveal exactly how it all happened, as well as when it all happened. The article is going to contain a lot of spoilers, so we have to warn you to keep an eye out if you haven’t seen the whole show.
Does Yūji die in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Yūji Itadori is, as we have established, the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen. Now, we know that Jujutsu Kaisen is a shonen title and shonen protagonists never die, especially not so early in the story. They might die along the way one or two times, but we cannot really remember a (major) shonen title where the protagonist actually died permanently; if they do die, they are somehow resurrected (like Goku in Dragon Ball or Ichigo from Bleach, for example). So, where does Yūji Itadori stand from this perspective? Well, we have to say two things here: first of all, Yūji Itadori is currently alive and well in Jujutsu Kaisen, and yes, Yūji Itadori has died in Jujutsu Kaisen.
Now, you might be wondering how that is possible, but as we have said – shonen characters dying and coming back to life is a normal thing, and that exact same thing happened to Itadori. During the Fearsome Womb arc, Itadori was killed by Sukuna, the same Sukuna that brought Itadori back to life very soon. And with that, Yūji Itadori continued his journey and is, as of this moment, alive and well in Jujutsu Kaisen and is participating in one of the series’ most brutal and dangerous events while also trying to liberate his mentor, Satoru Gōjō, from his current prison, where Pseudo-Geto put him in. In the next paragraph, we are going to explain how and when Itadori died in Jujutsu Kaisen, as well as how he came back to life.
How and when did Yūji Itadori die? What happened to him?
Through participating in High School’s Occult Club, Yūji Itadori accidentally came into the possession of an ancient magical relic known as Sukuna’s finger. The Jujutsu Sorcerer Megumi Fushigoro came to Itadori and asked him to give him the relic, but Yūji revealed that he did not have it on him and that his club president had it and planned to activate it later that night in school.
Megumi goes with Yūji to the school, where Curses arrive and want to take the relic and eat it to become stronger. While fighting the Curses, Yūji eats the finger himself and thus frees the powerful Sukuna from his imprisonment; still, thanks to Yūji’s willpower and the arrival of Satoru Gōjō, Sukuna is restrained. Yūji is later informed of the whole story and his destiny – he has to be killed in order to stop Sukuna’s resurrection, but Satoru will take him on as a protege and keep him alive as much as possible, but he has to become a Jujutsu sorcerer and help them on their missions. Yūji accepts and is enrolled in a new school with Gōjō as his teacher.
And that is how this story begins. This was a quick recap of the major events that led to Yūji going out on the mission that led to his death. The events we are about to describe happened in Episode 5 of Jujutsu Kaisen, titled “Fearsome Womb, Part 2”, which premiered on October 31, 2020. Yūji, Nobara, and Megumi are led to the prison facility for a mission by Kiyotaka Ijichi, who explains the circumstances to them a month after he and Megumi had saved a child from a Curse. Yūji is determined to go rescue the prisoners when a relative stops by to inquire about the safety of his kid.
The three note that the area has grown as they move nearer the center. Megumi also observes that there are no longer any exits, which leaves Yūji and Nobara wondering what to do. Yūji and Nobara are ecstatic when Megumi informs them that the Shikigami he summoned can locate the exit. The three move further into the center, where they come across dead bodies.
When Yūji checks out one of the bodies, she realizes it is the prisoner they are seeking for. The body is then returned, but Megumi prohibits Yūji from taking it. The argument between the two pupils then comes to an end when Nobara leaves the room. Unbeknownst to the two, an S-class Curse has already appeared. When Yūji uses Tozama to attack the spirit rapidly, the Curse easily breaks it and even amputates Yūji’s hand.
The latter makes an attempt to persuade Sukuna to assist them, but Sukuna rejects and even threatens to kill his buddies. Then, Yūji instructs Megumi to go and save Nobara and to notify him when they have exited because that is when he will exchange bodies with Sukuna. Yūji attempts to combat the Curse after Megumi departs but is quickly defeated. Yūji makes the desperate decision to punch the Curse while it is charged with Cursed Energy.
Yūji is easily defeated by The Curse, but they both unexpectedly hear a wolf howl—the signal Megumi was supposed to provide. When Yūji learns this, Sukuna engages him in conversation. As soon as the Curse is vanquished, Yūji is unable to reclaim his body, which leads Sukuna to seek Megumi. After some time, Yūji is able to return his body. He then speaks briefly with Megumi before passing away due to heart failure. And this is how Yūji Itadori died. Or is it? Well, it would be silly to kill off the main character in the fifth episode (or the ninth chapter), so everyone actually knew that Itadori would come back to life, and we are about to tell you how it happened.
The events we are about to describe in this section took place in Episode 6 of Jujutsu Kaisen, titled “After the Rain,” which had its premiere on November 7, 2020, in Japan. Yūji’s body is then taken to the morgue of the Tokyo Exorcism School so that it can be examined. Later, Yūji finds himself inside Sukuna’s living space, where he begins a fight with Sukuna. Sukuna easily overpowers Yūji and then tells him that they are not completely dead.
Yūji refuses Sukuna’s offer to resurrect him and requests that he do it without any conditions that would be beneficial to him in any way. Yūji agrees to Sukuna’s proposal that they have a clash, with the victor getting his deal, but Sukuna defeats him with absolute ease there as well. Yūji regained consciousness and was welcomed by Satoru before the examination could start.
Satoru and Shoko Ieiri discuss leaving the deceased Yūji on the records so that Yūji can be trained for the interschool competition as Yūji changes clothes. Later, Yūji is escorted into a room where Satoru discusses spells and the functioning of cursed energy. Yūji becomes happy when Satoru informs him that he is unable to cast spells, and he starts to feel enthusiastic.
Satoru invites him to smack his hand and explains that they would only use Cursed Energy to improve his combat skills. Satoru reveals that there was no Cursed Energy in his hand as Yūji slaps it and that the Cursed Energy is only fueled by unfavorable feelings. Then, Satoru informs Yūji that he must watch movies to hone his Cursed Energy.
He hands him one of the Principal’s dolls and tells him that he will watch movies to learn how to manage his flow of Cursed Energy and that the doll will attack him if he doesn’t emit a steady flow of Cursed Energy. Unfortunately for him, Yūji initially finds this difficult but eventually manages to master it.
Before departing for a meeting with Masamichi, Satoru inquires as to whether Yūji knew Sukuna before he passed away, but Yūji replies that he can’t recall. Later, when Satoru appears to instruct Yūji on Domain Expansion, Yūji succeeds in completing his training. After provoking Jōgo, Satoru leads him to where he is and orders Yūji not to leave. Satoru describes to Yūji the type of maneuver Jōgo is doing as he expands his domain.
Then Yūji observes as Satoru easily defeats Jōgo, a potent Curse. Hanami’s magic diverts Satoru and Yūji as he starts questioning Jōgo. Satoru and Yūji attempt to stop them, but Hanami escapes with Jōgo. Then, Satoru tells Yūji that he will work out diligently until the High School Tournament. Then, when Yūji inquires as to what he is discussing, Satoru is perplexed as to why he hasn’t told him.
